I just got a call from Senator John Kerry. A former US presidential candidate called me on the phone, out of the blue. Well, a recording of him, anyway. He, or rather his senatorial tape player, told me to vote not on Washington state initiative 330.
Boy those Dems have sure gotten themselves organized. This year I've seen more national political figures weighing in on local politics than any year I can remember. MoveOn has been all over local elections in any state with more than two democrats in it. Can't say I like national political committees and New England senators mucking about in a state initiative, but I'll take some organization over no organization. If they can mobilize people for a local election, they just may have a chance at mobilizing people at a national level.
Of course, having John Kerry's voicemail call me doesn't make me want to vote the party line. In fact, it almost backfired: as a rule, I like to oppose any position put forth by a cold-caller. Luckily, I haven't read the initiative yet, so I haven't formed an opinion. (How about that: rationalism saved by ignorance).
